On Track Project Update: November 20, 2023

On Friday, INDOT Commissioner Mike Smith was joined by the I-69 Finish Line project team and federal, state and local officials to officially open the Smith Valley Road interchange. The southbound entrance and exit ramps opened in August and the northbound ramps opened last week.

In addition to opening the Smith Valley Road interchange, the last of 14 traffic signals along the I-69 Finish Line corridor was removed last Thursday at Fairview Road. The removal allows for free flow conditions from Evansville to just south of I-465 in Indianapolis.  This video shows what the interchange looks like now and highlights the ongoing progress since construction began in December 2021.

  • Expect intermittent lane closures on east and westbound I-465 to move paving equipment this week. Additional lane closures for pavement striping are expected later this month, weather depending.
  • Watch for flagging on Belmont Avenue for heavy duty trucks moving in and out to unload material.
  • Progress continues near Southport Road – construction crews have installed noise barrier panels near Southern Dunes and have laid crushed stone to prepare for paving.
  • Crews in Johnson County are applying the finishing touches on S.R. 144 and Smith Valley Road. Motorists should expect slight delays as crews apply permanent striping.

The actual starting date and duration for work and any closures may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen activities occur.
