It’s more progress toward the I-69 Finish Line. Preparations begin this week to improve the first I-69 mainline bridge in Johnson County. Each weeknight from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., weather permitting, paving crews expect to close one lane of State Road 37 between S.R. 144 and Fairview Road.

Entire I-69 Finish Line Corridor Moving to Construction After Final Contracts Awarded

Governor Eric J. Holcomb and INDOT Commissioner Joe McGuinness announced today that the final two of five construction contracts to build the I-69 Finish Line project between Martinsville and Indianapolis have been awarded.

Get ready for a big traffic change on State Road 37 north of Martinsville as soon as this Saturday, Jan. 23. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction and shift to the northbound side of the highway from Morgan Street to S.R. 144. The S.R. 37 restrictions will be in place for most of this year.

It’s been a year of major progress on I-69 Finish Line in Martinsville and Morgan County. The latest milestone came late last week when the new overpass connecting Egbert Road with Old State Road 37 opened to traffic. It’s the fourth new overpass completed and opened to traffic this year. The Grand Valley Boulevard overpass opened this summer and the Waverly and Perry road overpasses followed this fall.

The fire station at the corner of State Road 37 and Smith Valley Road was part of the land needed to build a future I-69 interchange at this location. The White River Township Fire Department saw it as an opportunity to respond to the community’s growth and to plan for the future.

To stay ahead of today’s rain and snow in the forecast, I-69 Finish Line crews worked over the weekend to complete their restriping of Morgan and Jefferson streets. The restriping means a literal change in direction for drivers using Jefferson Street and the reconfiguration of some downtown parking spaces.

A new bridge highlights the most recent progress on I-69 Finish Line. The new bridge over S.R. 37 connecting Perry Road with Old S.R. 37 opened to traffic over the weekend. Motorists will notice more progress and should prepare for additional traffic changes as crews continue to complete several of the key 2020 improvements over the coming weeks.

Coming soon: new bridges! Work is nearing completion on three new bridges that will open to traffic in the coming weeks. The new bridge over State Road 37 at Perry Road will open first. It’s expected to open to traffic late this week. The new bridges over S.R. 37 for Waverly and Egbert roads are expected to open later this month.

On Track Update: October 26, 2020

Drivers will begin seeing many of the 2020 improvements and projects wrapping up in the coming weeks as crews stay on track to reach the I-69 Finish Line. That includes the completion of work to widen State Road 39. Crews are improving S.R. 39 in advance of next year’s temporary closure of S.R. 37 in Martinsville.

Changing traffic patterns are expected in downtown Martinsville in the next couple of weeks. The I-69 Finish Line Project Team has been working closely with the City of Martinsville to accommodate the restriping work needed downtown to safely move more traffic during next year’s temporary closure of State Road 37 in Martinsville. The city’s ongoing water main improvement project provides a perfect opportunity for coordination.

The I-69 Finish Line Project Team wants to shine the spotlight this week on a longtime Martinsville teacher and volunteer who has dedicated her life to helping others. Ruth Rusie will celebrate her 102nd birthday on Tuesday. After retiring from the MSD of Martinsville, Rusie continued to promote and champion literacy outside of the classroom along with a host of other volunteer efforts.

Crews have been paving the way to major progress on State Road 39. The widening work that has been underway since spring is winding to a close. Expect crews to complete their work along S.R. 39 and Morton Avenue in the next couple of weeks. Pavement widening is complete and crews will soon finish final surfacing and permanent striping.

On Track Update: September 28, 2020

Progress on I-69 is visible throughout Martinsville and Morgan County, but motorists will see the progress move north next year. Construction will be underway throughout the I-69 corridor in Marion, Johnson and northern Morgan counties starting in early 2021 and continuing through late 2024.

On Track Update: September 21, 2020

Progress on I-69 Finish Line will mean some daytime intermittent traffic stoppages on State Road 37 this week. Drivers should plan extra travel time, expect possible delays and slow down in the area. Traffic will be stopped for up to 20 minutes at a time as large concrete beams are delivered for two bridges under construction.

Watch for changes on State Road 37 this week as I-69 Finish Line crews continue preparations for a big traffic shift next year. You’ll see construction barrels stretching from Martinsville north to S.R. 144. Drivers need to stay alert, slow down and be prepared for lane closures. Police are enforcing a reduced speed limit of 45 MPH for the safety of both motorists and highway workers.

Progress on access road and bridge construction along State Road 37 north of Martinsville means that drivers should watch for changing traffic patterns in the coming days. New access roads are also starting to come online. The realigned Twin Branch Road is opening in phases to provide property access north of S.R. 44. A new access road connecting Country Club Road to Morgan Road and Myra Lane could open as early as next week.

Morgan County drivers will be among the first in the state to benefit from a new warning system proven to reduce severe crashes. The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is installing its first Intersection Conflict Warning System (ICWS) in Morgan County at State Road 144 and Neitzel/Pennington Road. Installation is scheduled to start today.

Road and bridge construction is very evident with signs of I-69 Finish Line progress throughout Martinsville and Morgan County, but it’s important to remember utility work and relocations are also continuing. Much of that progress is happening below ground and isn’t nearly as visible as other construction milestones happening along the corridor. Utility relocations are clearing the way for progress.

The journey to the I-69 Finish Line started in Martinsville last year with the corridor transforming before our eyes. Beams were set last week on another new bridge being built over S.R. 37. There are ten beams that will support the deck of the bridge. Each of the beams is 140 feet long, longer than any other beams used on I-69 Finish Line.

Even though some students aren’t returning to classrooms yet, the new school year is beginning. As more students return to the classroom, it’s important to remember to slow down and watch for stopped school buses picking up and dropping off students. The Indiana Department of Transportation is sharing these helpful reminders from Indiana State Police on when to stop for a school bus.

Beam me up! Crews are erecting new bridges near Egbert Road, Henderson Ford Road, Perry Road and Waverly Road to provide local connections when I-69 opens in northeast Morgan County. Much of the work so far has been building up the bridges high enough to pass over the highway. Crews start by driving steel piling deep into bedrock to provide a solid footing.

With I-69 Finish Line crews focusing their attention on Martinsville this year, city officials are looking ahead to what the completed project will mean to the area. “I think it’s going to bring a lot of opportunities to Martinsville,” said Mayor Kenny Costin. I-69 Finish Line will upgrade the existing State Road 37 to interstate standards from Martinsville to Indianapolis.

Construction is an ongoing reality for the State Road 37 corridor to complete the I-69 connection between Evansville and Indianapolis. Ensuring safe navigation during construction is a top priority for the Indiana Department of Transportation.

Another long-term road closure is beginning in Martinsville to rebuild and realign Mahalasville Road in preparation for major I-69 interchange construction next year. Mahalasville Road south of State Road 37 is closing to through traffic today. The closure is expected to continue through fall.

If you’re driving in Indiana, you shouldn’t be holding a phone or any other mobile device. Putting the phone down will not only keep you and other drivers safer, but it’s the law starting this Wednesday. The new law, which takes effect July 1, prohibits drivers from holding mobile devices, like smartphones and tablets, while driving.

I-69 Finish Line is an important final piece that will complete the new Interstate 69 connection between Evansville and Indianapolis. It begins in Martinsville, where crews have been out in force, and construction will continue to move north to Indianapolis. Work will be underway corridor-wide early next year. This construction overview map provides a summary of the five contracts the project has been divided into and a timeline.

IT’S OPEN! The first cars have driven across the new Grand Valley Boulevard overpass and the first pedestrians have tried out the new sidewalks. The new overpass opened this morning. It connects Martinsville High School and neighborhoods west of State Road 37 with businesses east of the highway.
