On Track Project Update: July 31, 2023

Last week, I-69 Finish Line crews successfully reopened westbound I-465 on the southwest side of Indianapolis. During the three-week closure, workers and equipment were able to safely and efficiently complete bridge, roadway and drainage work that lays the foundation for the next phases of I-465 construction.

As work progresses in Marion County, we thank motorists for their continued patience as we move closer to the Finish Line. As always, please slow down and drive distraction free in all construction zones.

Motorists will notice some changes at the Smith Valley Road interchange by mid-August, if not before. Crews are working to get the interchange partially open, including the bridge over future I-69 and the southbound on and off ramps. The northbound on and off ramps will come online later this year when the mainline roadway is put into its final configuration.  The Mullinix Road roundabout will open at the same time as the overpass bridge.

Access to northbound S.R. 37 from Smith Valley Road will be at County Line Road via Bluffdale Drive (western service road).  We’ll have more information about timing of the partial opening and changing traffic patterns in the coming days and in next week’s On Track newsletter.

  • An extra lane on northbound Harding Street opened this weekend. This extra capacity will remain until crews begin work on the remaining Harding Street pier later this summer.
  • Motorists traveling eastbound on I-465 should watch for trucks entering and exiting the interstate as work continues for the future systems interchange connecting I-69 to I-465.
  • The on ramp from Mann Road to eastbound I-465 is scheduled to close for total reconstruction in mid-August. This closure could last up to 60 days.
  • Northbound I-69 narrows to one lane under S.R. 144 for the reconstruction of the S.R. 37 bridge over Bluff Creek. Drivers should expect occasional delays, especially during morning and evening rush hours.
  • Watch for crews in the median and shoulder as they perform maintenance tasks such as installing highway fencing and cable rails and applying other finishing touches.
  • Overall, please watch your speed and follow the posted 45-mph speed limit in work zones.

The actual starting date and duration for work and any closures may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen activities occur.
