Construction FAQs

Martinsville

Traffic is expected to shift to a new bridge over S.R. 37 later in 2021 connecting S.R. 44 with Reuben Drive. Rueben Drive is closed west of SR 37, extending past Kristi Road. A portion of the existing S.R. 37 pavement is currently being used to provide a temporary connection for S.R. 44 to S.R. 252/Hospital Drive.

The closure of Burton Lane at S.R. 37 is scheduled for late summer and is being coordinated with the opening of a new section of Southview Drive along S.R. 37. This new access road will connect Burton Lane with a roundabout being built at the S.R. 39/Morton Avenue ramps.

Morgan County

North of the S.R. 37 closure in Martinsville, the new I-69 lanes are being built in phases between Morgan Street and S.R. 144.

S.R. 37 traffic is reduced to two lanes – one in each direction separated by concrete barrier – and shifted to one side of the highway. Both directions of traffic will share the northbound side of S.R. 37 until mid-summer, when S.R. 37 will shift to the new southbound lanes. S.R. 37 lanes.

Local traffic is encouraged to use local streets where they can no longer turn left onto or off S.R. 37. The project team does not recommend that traffic make a U-turn in the S.R. 37 work zone.

There are a few pull-off areas and gaps in the concrete barriers to allow for emergency access. If an incident closes one side of the highway to all traffic, emergency crews can also access the incident from the closed section in the opposite direction. The contractors meet with first responders on a regular basis and identify access points ahead of major traffic changes.

The two bridges and the access road extension are expected to open to traffic by the end of 2022. In 2021, crews are lowering the highway through this area to build the new I-69 lanes. Excess dirt from S.R. 37 is being moved to build up the roadbed for Morgan Street, the Teeters Road and Myra Lane bridges and interchanges further north.

The new Henderson Ford Road bridge is expected to open next year as the pre-existing S.R. 37 intersection closes to traffic for interchange ramp construction. At that time, the traffic signal will be moved north to provide temporary S.R. 37 access at Ennis Road until all of the new interchange ramps open.

Johnson County

The new I-69 southbound pavement and bridges are expected to be built between Belmont Avenue in Marion County and Fairview Road in Johnson County. New access roads will also be built along both sides of the existing S.R. 37. Along the southeast side, a new road will connect Stones Crossing Road and Travis Road to the future S.R. 144 interchange. Along the northwest side, access roads will connect S.R. 144, Smith Valley Road to a new roundabout at the County Line Road interchange. The existing S.R. 37 northbound bridge over Honey Creek, which is just north of Smith Valley Road, will be widened as the first step in building the new I-69 lanes and bridges in that area.

Huggin Hollow Road is being realigned north of Banta Road to connect with N. Waverly Park Road/Old S.R. 37 just south of S.R. 144. The new roadway is expected to open in mid-summer.

S.R. 37 lanes may be shifted and restricted to build the new I-69 in phases, but two lanes are expected to remain open northbound for the weekday morning rush and southbound for the evening rush.

Marion County

Crews have been preparing the land to make way for the future I-69. Utility crews are installing new service lines that do not conflict with construction. You may have also seen crews drilling for soil samples or surveyors measuring locations and elevations. This work informs the design work that is occurring off-site.

Construction is expected to focus on the new I-69 southbound pavement and bridges between Belmont Avenue in Marion County and Fairview Road in Johnson County. As part of this construction a new County Line Road roundabout, connecting I-69 southbound entrance and exit ramps, and access roads south of Wicker Road will be built. Also planned construction for 2021 includes replacement of the Mooresville Road Bypass and Keystone Avenue bridges over I-465.

S.R. 37 lanes may be shifted and restricted to build the new I-69 in phases, but two lanes are expected to remain open northbound for the weekday morning rush and southbound for the evening rush.

New lanes will be added to I-465 on the southwest side of Indianapolis to improve safety and accommodate current and future traffic needs. The project will make improvements and add capacity to I-465 from approximately I-70 on the west side of Indianapolis to I-65.

Large, high-speed ramps will be built west of the existing I-465 interchange at Harding Street to connect I-69 and I-465. The new I-69 will break off from the existing SR 37 between Edgewood Avenue and Epler Road.

The I-69 Finish Line project is coordinating with other INDOT and local road construction projects. For example, the portion I-465 that is part of the I-69 project will not be restricted during peak times when it serves as an alternate route for the North Split project.
