On Track Project Update: May 30, 2023

The I-69 Finish Line project team hopes you enjoyed the holiday weekend. Construction crews had a short but well-deserved break and were back on the job early this morning.

The eastbound I-465 directional closure is still on track to begin Friday night. Putting a closure of this scope in place requires extensive preparation and wide coordination — it’s not as easy as flipping a switch. There have been countless meetings and weeks of planning with construction crews, law enforcement, first responders, local businesses and INDOT traffic divisions.

Here’s a rough timeline for implementing the I-465 EB closure:

Friday, June 2 at approximately 8 p.m. — Motorists traveling south on I-465 approaching the Sam Jones Expressway and I-70 will encounter a reduction from five to four open lanes.

Around 9 p.m. — Southbound I-465 will be reduced to one lane.  This reduction may take a few hours.

Between 9 p.m. on Friday, June 2 and 1 a.m. on Saturday, June 3 — Crews will gradually add barriers at points where there is no longer access, such as on-ramps along I-465 EB. Stay alert and use caution during barrier installation.

By 2 a.m. Saturday, the eastbound lanes of I-465 should be fully closed with traffic detoured to I-70. In addition to eastbound I-465 travel lanes, the following ramps will be closed through Wednesday, June 21:

Starting between 8 and 9 p.m. Friday:

  • I-70 EB and WB to I-465 SB/EB

Starting around 9 p.m. Friday, progressing in sequence through 1 a.m. Saturday:

  • Kentucky Avenue/S.R. 67 to/from I-465 EB
  • Mann Road to I-465 EB
  • Harding Street/S.R. 37 to/from I-465 EB
  • East Street/U.S. 31 to/from I-465 EB

Various signage and messaging have been deployed at key locations on all interstates entering Marion County, advising motorists of the closure. During the entirety of the eastbound directional closure, first responders will have access into and through the project area.

The I-465 EB closure is necessary to allow crews to complete work related to added lane capacity, perform necessary road surface upgrades, and place under-pavement pipework to improve drainage.

The official detour will follow I-70 EB to I-65 SB at the South Split. Be advised – during peak traffic times, traffic may be slower than normal. As previously shared, here’s a video overview of the closure area. Maps are available for download here.

  • During nighttime hours prior to 8 p.m. on Friday, there will be left lane closures on I-465 between I-65 and I-70 on the southwest side of Indianapolis. These closures are required for median work and to prepare for the directional closures.
  • The westbound lanes of I-465 between I-65 and I-70 will close on or after July 7.
  • Motorists accessing southbound S.R. 37 from Southport Road will use a temporary ramp until the permanent ramp is complete.
  • The ramp from northbound S.R. 37 to County Line Road will be closed for paving tonight (Tuesday) from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. The detour is Fairview Road to Bluff Road to County Line Road.
  • Mullinix Road east of S.R. 37 is closed between Smith Valley Road and Olive Branch Road for approximately two months for roundabout construction. More information is here.
  • On or after Monday, June 5, Waverly Park Road immediately south of relocated Huggin Hollow Road will close to traffic. Both Huggin Hollow Road intersections at Waverly Park Road will remain open during this closure. Access from Huggin Hollow Road to S.R. 144 will remain open. The closure is expected to last three weeks.

Travel Tips During Construction

  • Make sure you are prepared for the summer construction season. Follow I-69 Finish Line on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to stay on top of when and where work is happening and how traffic might be affected.
  • Plan ahead by downloading INDOT’s TrafficWise app or viewing the interactive map at 511in.org. Create an account to receive notifications of restrictions or closures along your route.
  • Appoint a fellow traveler who isn’t behind the wheel to stay attuned to those alerts and other real-time mapping apps so you focus on the roadway and steer clear of unforeseen delays.

The actual starting date and duration for work and any closures may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen activities occur.
