On Track Project Update: April 4, 2022

Construction of the new I-69 in Marion County takes another big step forward with a State Road 37 northbound traffic shift that is expected to begin tonight. Between Wicker Road and Epler Avenue, northbound traffic will cross the center median to share the west side of the road with the southbound lanes, separated by temporary barriers. This allows road crews to begin rebuilding the highway and adding lanes for the future I-69.

Northbound S.R. 37 should expect lane closures and brief traffic stoppages overnight while crews restripe the highway.

The traffic shift will also close several local roads in the area. Edgewood Avenue east of S.R. 37 will close permanently and Belmont Avenue between Edgewood and Epler avenues will close for much of this year. Click to see a map of the closures and alternate routes in the area.

Belmont Avenue will also close permanently east of S.R. 37. Access the area from Winslet Boulevard/Aspen Lakes Apartments from the north or Wicker Road from the south.

  • The Mooresville Road Bypass bridge over I-465 reached a milestone when crews installed large concrete beams early Thursday morning. I-465 traffic should expect nighttime lane closures to continue this week near bridgework at Madison Avenue.
  • Work to remove overhead light towers is anticipated Wednesday night and will close the right lane of Harding Street at I-465 and the S.R. 67/Kentucky Avenue ramp (loop ramp) to I-465 westbound.
  • Traffic should anticipate nighttime S.R. 37 lane closures and 20-minute stoppages early this week when crews install bridge beams for the new Southport Road bridge.
  • Expect S.R. 144 traffic to be shifted and restricted today to narrow 10-foot lanes for I-69 interchange construction between the White River bridge and the Bluff Creek Parkway access road east of S.R. 37. Left turning traffic may block eastbound S.R. 144 at Huggin Hollow Road and westbound traffic at Old S.R. 37/Waverly Park Road. Drivers should expect delays and seek alternate routes.
  • Today’s scheduled traffic shift will close Old S.R. 37 and Wellington Drive north of S.R. 144. The realigned Huggin Hollow Road at the Circle K and BP gas stations will serve as the detour. Click here to see a map of the traffic pattern changes.
  • Another access point to Old S.R. 37 from the north opened over the weekend. Smith Valley Road west of S.R. 37 has been rerouted to a temporary stone road and a new roundabout.
  • Expect intermittent S.R. 37 traffic stoppages Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Smith Valley Road for crews to move traffic signal poles at the intersection.
  • Mullinix Road south of Smith Valley Road should expect daytime flaggers and narrow lanes later this week for waterline installation.
  • Daytime traffic delays for flagging and nighttime I-69 ramp closures are expected to start today near the I-69 interchanges at S.R. 252/Hospital Drive, Ohio Street/Artesian Avenue and S.R. 44/Reuben Drive. Crews are applying the final layer of pavement, permanent striping and shoulder buzz strips.
  • Crews expect to close Ohio Street entrances to the Artesian Square shopping center as early as next week. Alternate access points will be used for Kroger and Rural King. Local access to Walgreens will be through the work zone.
  • Cramertown Loop remains closed south of S.R. 252 to replace a drainage structure and rebuild a small section of the road. Click for a map of the closure and local access routes. S.R. 252 also is expected to close for about a week by early May to complete the roundabout at the intersection.
  • S.R. 39/Morton Avenue roundabout construction continues at Rogers Road. The new S.R. 39/Morton Avenue ramp to I-69 southbound is expected to open this week in Martinsville. The temporary two-way ramp built for last year’s S.R. 37 closure will be removed.

The actual starting date and duration for work and any closures may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen activities occur.
